hide and seek

you may not believe me when i say this, but when it started out, this really was a very pretty little cake – all rosy-red (plum) cheeks and jaunty slivered almonds.

then it went into the oven and things started to change – the plums decided to be shy and play a game of hide and seek. so they sunk and hid right at the bottom of the pan, pretending they had never been there in the first place.
those shy little plums.

whilst aesthetically this was a shame, luckily, in flavour these timid little stonefruit did not disappoint. deliciously fruity and a little bit tart, they were the perfect foil for the soft, buttery cake and honey-sweet almond flakes.

all in all, it was the perfect accompaniment to an autumn afternoon
and a big pot of tea.
